Privacy Policy

AfroLikes is being built on trust — and that starts with how we treat your data, from the very first email address.

Who We Are

AfroLikes Marketplace Ltd ("AfroLikes") is a company registered in England and Wales, of 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ, and the data controller for the personal data described here. AfroLikes is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office, registration reference ZC209999. Contact: hello@afrolikes.com.

What We Collect, and Why

The Guestlist: your first name and email address, so we can send you the free Style Authority Guide, launch updates and AfroLikes news you asked for. Lawful basis: consent, given via our sign-up form and confirmed by double opt-in. You can withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing.

House applications (a House is a business that sells its pieces or offers its services on AfroLikes): your name, email, business name, product category, country of operation, portfolio link, years trading, and anything else you choose to tell us, so we can assess your application. Lawful basis: steps taken at your request prior to entering a contract, for the assessment itself; consent for programme marketing emails.

House verification: where an application progresses, we verify the business before it can list. This means checking public company registers (including Companies House), the names and roles of directors and people with significant control, filing history, and screening those names against sanctions, politically exposed person and adverse-media sources; we may also ask for a director's identity document and proof of the business bank account. Most of this is already public information. Lawful basis: our legitimate interests in verifying a business counterparty and protecting customers from fraud, and — for the assessment of the application itself — steps taken prior to entering a contract. If you are a director or owner of an applying business and want to know what we hold about you, ask us. We use AI tools, under contract, to help prepare verification summaries. Every verification decision is made by a person.

Orders (from trading launch): your name, contact details, delivery address, order details and, for made-to-measure pieces, your measurements, so that the sale can be concluded on the House's behalf and the House can make and deliver your order. We share with the House only what it needs to fulfil your order. Lawful basis: performance of the contract. Payment card details are handled by our payment provider and are never stored by AfroLikes.

Website analytics and advertising: non-essential cookies and pixels run only with your consent.

What We Do Not Do

  • We do not sell your data.
  • We do not share it with third parties for their own marketing.
  • We do not use it for automated decision-making with legal or similarly significant effects. Every House verification decision is made by a person.

Who Processes Data for Us

Carefully chosen processors under data-processing agreements, including our email platform (which stores Guestlist and applicant contact data and manages double opt-in and unsubscribe), our website and payment platform, and — for orders — the verified House fulfilling your order. Some processors store data outside the UK/EEA; where they do, transfers are protected by appropriate safeguards.

How Long We Keep It

Guestlist: as long as you want to hear from us, and not much longer. Unconfirmed sign-ups are deleted after 30 days. Guestlist data is deleted within 30 days of unsubscribing, other than the minimal suppression record needed to make sure we never email you again.

Unsuccessful House applications: deleted within 12 months of the decision, unless you ask us to keep them on file.

Verified Houses: verification and transaction records are kept for six years after the end of the relationship. We are required to keep marketplace records for this period, and it matches the period in which a contract claim could be brought.

Orders: order records are kept for six years, as required for tax and consumer-law purposes.

Your Rights

Under UK GDPR you can ask us to: access the data we hold about you; correct it; delete it; restrict or object to its use; port it elsewhere; and withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any right, email hello@afrolikes.com — we respond within one month. If you are unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the ICO at ico.org.uk.

Changes

This notice will be updated, and materially expanded, before marketplace trading opens. We will flag significant changes by email.
